U.S. Supreme Court Rules for Non-Union Members against Mandatory Fees for Public Employee Union Political Activities

In a 5-to-4 decision issued yesterday, the U.S. Supreme Court held that public employees who are not union members cannot be required to pay special fees to finance a union’s political activities unless they affirmatively agree to the assessments beforehand. Knox v. Service Employees International Union, No. 10-1121 (June 21, 2012).
