Indian Cabinet Approves Nagoya Protocol Ratification

Nagoya Protocol, access and benefit sharing, genetic resourcesYesterday, India’s Union Cabinet gave its approval for ratification of the Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit Sharing, a supplementary agreement to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). Press Release, Ratification of Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit Sharing by India (Oct. 4, 2012).¬†As explained in the Cabinet Secretariat’s press release, the objective of the Nagoya Protocol on ABS is fair and equitable sharing of benefits, arising from the use of genetic resources, including by appropriate access to genetic resources and by appropriate transfer of relevant technologies. The Union Cabinet decision coincides with the Eleventh Conference of Parties (CoP) to the CBD, which is currently in session in Hyderabad.
