European Union Extends Term of Performers’ & Producers’ Exclusive Rights in Music Recordings by 20 Years

On September 12, 2011, the Council of the European Union adopted a directive extending the term of the exclusive rights of performers and phonogram producers in music recordings within the EU from 50 to 70 years. See New rules on term of protection of music recordings and DIRECTIVE OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT AND OF THE COUNCIL amending Directive 2006/116/EC on the term of protection of copyright and certain related rights.
