California Man Receives 18-Month Prison Sentence for Copyright Infringement

The U.S. Department of Justice (“DOJ”) announced that a Sacramento, California man has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for copyright infringement because he rented and sold unauthorized copies of Hollywood movies such as The Godfather and Indiana Jones. Yan Akhumov, aged 46, was indicted after agents searched his businesses and seized over 80,000 CDs and DVDs. According to the DOJ’s press release, Akhumov pleaded guilty and stipulated that the value of infringing materials seized was between US$70,000 and US$120,000.
